Abuela of My Dreams

We know nothing of tomorrow;
our business is to be good and happy today.
--Samuel Taylor Coleridge

My grandmother lived a full and happy life. I loved her stories of swimming in the ocean and diving under the waves. Or hunting for dinner with her own rifle. I know everyone thinks their grandmother is the best cook ever, but my grandmother really was. The best part about her is she loved her family most of all.

Ode to a Dream Girl in Vintage

"Another sunny day, I met you up in the garden. . .
. . .I took a photograph of you in the herbaceous border
It broke the heart of men and flowers and girls and trees."
My Bestest Mate, Mich is like a
Belle & Sebastian song come to life.
And not just because she went to
Glasgow 3 times in 1 year with me.
She lives a happy life in vintage dresses
and will travel at the drop of a hat to see me.

Like to Mexico, D.F.

Or Paris, even when she was preggers.

She will always dance with you -
no matter the setting or circumstance.
"I could dance all night like I'm a soul boy
But you know I'd rather drag myself across the dance floor"
Like here she is dancing on her wedding day
in her second vintage dress of the day.

(This was the 1st vintage dress of the day.)

Mich makes me want to cut bangs but,
like 80% of us girls that would be a mistake.
I might just do it, though.
If I could look half as perfect as her it'd be worth it.

She got us backstage at the Hollywood Bowl
and all she had to do was walk around with an accordion.

You know the best part about her?

No, not the fact that's pretty to look at and funny.
She's an investment banker.

What a Dreamy Mom I Have. . .

Today is my mom's birthday. She taught us girls the importance of always dressing for the occasion (read: jeans are only acceptable with heels but really you should always be in a dress).

This is her version of casual dress.
Hair, makeup and monochromatic outfit.

Here she is last Christmas in clothes she bought in the 80s:
I'm really grateful she kept so many pieces. If only her feet weren't size 7 1/2 (or, if only my feet weren't size 10).

My favorite thing now is to borrow her clothes.

No! Not this!
But, kudos to her for wearing this once in the 80s and making it work (her waist is so tiny I could barely get this gorgeous jumpsuit on and off).

I was talking about the St. John (me) and Chanel (Ash).

Happy Birthday to the lady who taught me
to always wear heels, even in the kitchen.
Ouch.
